Sony a6700: A Creator's Dream (or Just Hype?) - My Review

The Sony a6700 has been generating a lot of buzz, especially aimed at content creators. I've been using it for a few weeks now, paired with the 18-135mm lens, and I'm ready to share my thoughts. Does it live up to the hype? Let's dive in.

What I Loved:

  • Image Quality: The 26MP sensor delivers crisp, detailed images, even in challenging lighting conditions. Dynamic range is impressive, allowing for good recovery in post-processing. The 18-135mm lens is a decent all-rounder, offering a useful zoom range for both stills and video.
  • AI-Powered Autofocus: This is a game-changer. The real-time tracking is incredibly sticky, locking onto subjects and following them with impressive accuracy. Eye AF, both for humans and animals, works flawlessly. It makes shooting video and stills so much easier, especially when you're moving or your subject is unpredictable.
  • Video Capabilities: 4K 60p recording is fantastic. The footage is sharp and clean. The improved autofocus system makes video work significantly smoother. Features like the dedicated video record button and flip-out screen are welcome additions for vloggers and content creators.
  • Ergonomics and Build: The camera feels solid and well-built. The grip is comfortable, even with the larger lens attached. The menu system, while still a bit complex, is more intuitive than previous Sony cameras. The flip-out screen is a huge plus for vlogging and shooting from different angles.
  • Compact Size: Despite packing a punch, the a6700 remains relatively compact and lightweight, making it great for travel and all-day shooting.

What Could Be Better:

  • Rolling Shutter: While improved over previous models, rolling shutter is still noticeable in fast-panning video shots. It's not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of.
  • Battery Life: Battery life is decent, but not exceptional. If you're shooting a lot of video or using the autofocus intensively, you'll likely need to carry a spare battery.
  • Lens Selection: While the 18-135mm is a good starting point, the E-mount lens ecosystem, especially for APS-C, can be a bit pricey. Finding affordable, high-quality lenses can be a challenge.
  • Menu System (Still): While improved, the menu system can still be a bit overwhelming, especially for new users. It takes some time to get used to navigating the various options.
  • Price: The a6700, especially with the 18-135mm lens, is not cheap. It's a significant investment, and you need to consider if the features justify the cost for your needs.

Final Verdict:

The Sony a6700 is a fantastic camera, especially for content creators. The AI-powered autofocus, impressive video capabilities, and solid image quality make it a compelling option. While it has a few minor drawbacks, they are outweighed by its strengths. If you're looking for a versatile and capable camera for both stills and video, the a6700 is definitely worth considering. However, the price point means you should carefully evaluate your needs and budget before making a purchase.
