Canon EOS R10: A Fantastic Entry Point to the EOS R System (with a caveat)

The Canon EOS R10 has been my companion for the past few weeks, and I've come away impressed, though not without a few reservations. This review focuses on the body and the RF-S 18-45mm kit lens, as that's the combination I've been using. If you're looking to dip your toes into the mirrorless world, or perhaps upgrade from an older DSLR, the R10 is definitely worth considering, but it's not a perfect camera.

What I Love:

Image Quality: For an APS-C sensor, the image quality is excellent. Sharp details, good dynamic range, and pleasing colors are what I've come to expect from Canon, and the R10 delivers. The included 18-45mm lens is surprisingly decent for a kit lens, offering a useful zoom range for everyday shooting.

Autofocus: Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF is renowned for its speed and accuracy, and the R10 is no exception. Subject tracking is particularly impressive, locking onto eyes and faces with ease. This makes it great for capturing fast-moving subjects, like kids or pets.

Ergonomics: The R10 feels comfortable in hand, despite its relatively compact size. The controls are well-placed and intuitive, making it easy to adjust settings on the fly. The vari-angle touchscreen is a welcome addition, making shooting from different angles a breeze.

Video Capabilities: The R10 can record 4K video at up to 60fps (with a crop) and 1080p at up to 120fps. The video quality is good, and the autofocus system works remarkably well in video mode too. It's a solid option for content creators.

Compact and Lightweight: Compared to my old DSLR, the R10 is a joy to carry around. It's lightweight and compact, making it ideal for travel and everyday photography.

What I Don't Love:

Kit Lens Limitations: While the 18-45mm is a good starting point, its small aperture (f/4.5-6.3) limits its low-light performance. You'll likely want to invest in a faster lens if you plan on shooting in dimly lit environments.

Battery Life: The battery life is decent, but not exceptional. I found myself needing to swap batteries after a day of heavy shooting. If you're a serious photographer, consider investing in a spare battery.

Limited RF-S Lens Selection: Being a newer system, the selection of RF-S lenses (designed specifically for APS-C) is currently limited compared to the full-frame RF options or the older EF/EF-S lenses. This might be a concern if you have specific lens requirements.

No In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS): The lack of IBIS is a bit disappointing, especially at this price point. While the kit lens has image stabilization, it's not as effective as IBIS. This can make shooting in low light or at longer focal lengths more challenging.

Final Verdict:

The Canon EOS R10 is a great camera for beginners and enthusiasts looking for a compact and capable mirrorless camera. It offers excellent image quality, a fantastic autofocus system, and impressive video capabilities.

However, the limitations of the kit lens, the battery life, the limited RF-S lens selection, and the lack of IBIS are worth considering. If you're willing to invest in better lenses and can live with the other shortcomings, the R10 is a fantastic entry point into the EOS R system. I'd recommend it, but with the caveat that you should be aware of its limitations and consider your specific needs before making a purchase.
